Their market share will likely continue to grow as a U.S. bank regulator recently announced fintech companies, if approved, will be allowed to operate independently across the country under a single federal license. When applying for a loan you are asked what amount of money you want to borrow from a lender such as a bank, credit union or online lender. Once approved, the money from a personal loan can be used for anything you choose, be it paying off credit card debt, medical expenses, consolidating other debts, or buying a new appliance. To pay back a personal loan, you make the same payment amount over the set amount of time until the loan is completely paid off.

Occasionally, a fraudulent loan company will offer outrageous loans and loan terms with a catch: You have to pay the first few months of payments to qualify. “They usually ask for these funds via Western Union or Moneygram,” says Detweiler. “But it’s a complete scam.” No reputable lender would ask you to pay money upfront. “Do not pay money upfront for a personal loan under any circumstances,” she says.

Be prepared to answer questions : You might need to answer some questions about your financial situation, like verifying your employment status or your monthly income. If you’re self-employed, you’ll probably be asked for some follow-up information. You’ll also need to wait while the lender runs a hard credit check, and you could have to answer some questions if there is anything unusual in your credit history.

It might be easier to get a personal loan from a bank where you already have a relationship. The bank will probably want to know what you’re going to use the money for and might even have a better loan for your needs. As with any other loan, choose your personal loans wisely and borrow only what you can afford to repay. Take time to calculate what your monthly payments will be so that you’re sure you can incorporate those payments into your budget. Compare rates before settling on a lender. You might want to try to borrow less or give your credit score some time to improve if you’re being offered money at high interest rates.

You’ll have a set period of time to repay your personal loan. Loan periods are usually stated in months: 12, 24, 36, 48, or 60. Longer repayment periods lower your monthly loan repayment by dividing the principal amount borrowed by more months, but you’ll also pay more in interest than if you had a shorter repayment period because interest is added on per payment. Your interest rate can be tied to your repayment period as well. You might get a lower interest rate if you finance the loan over a shorter period. Having an open loan can affect your ability to get approved for other credit cards and loans, so you might not be able to borrow more for an additional two years if you take the loan out for five years rather than three. And it’s not always possible to pay the loan off early if you find yourself in this predicament. Some loans have a prepayment penalty for paying off early.

“Don’t borrow money and go into debt for a vacation,” Detweiler urges. “You’ll come back from vacation in debt. Save the money instead, or have a staycation.” Like vacations, a wedding financed with debt is rarely a good idea. “Don’t start your marriage in debt,” says Detweiler. If you have to use a personal loan for your wedding, make sure you shop around for a loan with the lowest interest rate and best terms. If you believe you could pay the balance off in a short amount of time, you may also be better off with a 0 percent APR credit card.

As we mentioned, a personal loan is easy to grasp. You borrow money at a fixed interest rate, over a fixed amount of time, then you pay a fixed monthly payment until your loan is paid off. While the terms of your personal loan can depend on an array of factors, these loans are typically offered in amounts up to $35,000. You may be able to borrow this amount for any length of time from 12 months to 20 years. In addition to the interest rate you’ll pay, personal loans may also come with an origination fee which can range from 1 percent to as high as 8 percent at some lenders, according to a review of personal loan terms on MagnifyMoney.com. On the bright side, it’s a competitive business and many lenders charge no origination fee or any other fees upfront. The real costs to worry about with personal loans involve the APR. Interest rates charged through personal loans can vary quite a bit, and they are typically higher than you see with secured loans such as home equity or auto loans. That’s because personal loans are unsecured debts. Whereas a secured loan — think home or auto loan — is secured by an underlying investment (in these cases, a home or car), unsecured loans aren’t secured by an investment. The banks are taking on a greater risk lending without any collateral, so they charge higher fees and APRs as a result.

Taking a personal loan to cover medical expenses “can be very helpful, especially if it keeps you out of collections,” Detweiler says. Before you take this step, however, you should speak to your provider to see if it offers a payment plan. A personal loan is as another form of credit you can use to make a big purchase or consolidate your debts. Personal loans usually come with lower interest rates than credit cards, so they often can be used to consolidate multiple debts into a single, affordable monthly payment. Personal loans versus credit cards According to Paul Gentile, president of Cooperative Credit Union Association, there are definitely times where a credit card may be better than a personal loan. “A credit card can be used to purchase something, so that can offer more flexibility,” he says. Credit cards can also be a great deal if you pay them off monthly, he notes, since you have the potential to earn rewards. Lastly, credit cards can be beneficial for certain short-term purchases since many offer 0 percent APR for 12 to 21 months. On the flip side, “a personal loan may be better for someone who wants to make a large, intentional purchase that they planned for.” Personal loans also offer the benefit of a fixed payment and payoff date, whereas credit cards can literally tether you to payments indefinitely if you keep using them for purchases.

Wait for a reply : Once the lender has all of the necessary information, they’ll carry out the underwriting process. This is where they calculate your level of risk in order to decide whether to give you the loan and what rates and terms to offer. Most online lenders will give you an initial response within a few minutes, but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer for final approval. Thanks to their advanced algorithm, most online lenders will let you know if you’ve been approved within a couple of hours, or at least by the next business day.

If you’re considering a personal loan, here’s what you’ll need to qualify: Good or excellent credit – Some personal loan companies will approve you with a credit score as low as 580, according to MagnifyMoney’s parent company, LendingTree. But having very good credit (a FICO score over 740) will put you in a position to qualify for a personal loan with the best interest rate and terms. Proof of ability to repay – You need to be able to show your ability to repay your loan, usually with pay stubs or other evidence of employment. Low debt-to-income ratio – Lenders may be hesitant to lend you money if your debt-to-income ratio is high. This ratio is determined by taking your total monthly recurring debt and dividing it by your monthly income. Discover Personal Loans notes that borrowers with a debt-to-income ratio below 36 percent may qualify for the best terms and rates on loans and mortgages. Co-signer – If your credit score is poor, you may need a co-signer with good credit to help you qualify for a personal loan.

Taking out a personal loan can help you borrow the money you need to achieve any goal, but that doesn’t mean these loans are without risk. Some of the perils you’ll face when taking out any loan include:Overspending – A personal loan can be the answer to your prayers, but some experts say they’re almost too easy. “No one is going to question what you’re spending the money on, so you might use this loan to justify things you shouldn’t really buy,” says Detweiler. “If you go overboard, you can end up with debt that takes years to pay off and a lifetime of regret.” Damage to your credit if you don’t repay the loan – Obviously, your personal loan may go off without a hitch if you don’t borrow too much and can always afford your payments. “But if you can’t afford your payments due to job loss or another issue, your credit will see damage,” Detweiler explains. That damage can ruin your credit, or even lead to collections or bankruptcy. Bad financial habits – Getting into the habit of constantly borrowing money can make your life more difficult, she adds. While personal loans can be easy to get, relying on credit over and over can leave you short on cash to reach other financial goals.

Good but basic model. Consider upgrading to VTech’s next level monitor.
By Stepone VINE VOICE on July 27, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What’s this? )
We have used this model (“yellow”) and VTech’s most popular model, the DM221 (“silver”), also available on Amazon.

Both have clear, reliable audio connections. We are in a 2-story house, about 2300 sq ft on a 9000 sq ft lot and never dropped a signal or had any other connection problems. The audio on both models is the same.

Because we are in a 2-story, we use both parent units and would strongly encourage anyone with 2 stories or a single floor layout to do themselves the favor of getting 2 parent units. We keep one in our bedroom and one in the main living area.

This yellow model lacks a couple of features that may not be critical to performance but add a lot of convenience.

The silver model has parent talk-back (2-way communication) which we find is increasingly helpful as our child progresses through toddler years. In a 2-parent household (and/or where there are older kids around), the feature can also be a great help as a walkie-talkie when one person is with the baby. We didn’t use this often, but it was a tremendous help on a couple of sick nights.

Of course, if you’re looking for a monitor to use when caring for an older child or adult, then the 2-way feature may be essential, and this (yellow) model is not for you.

Another potential reason to spring for the silver/221–depending on your home and lifestyle–is the rechargeable battery in the parent units. We usually leave ours plugged and stationary (even more so with 2 parent units) but when we need to move around, it’s great to know we never have to worry about the battery level. Granted, the rechargeable batteries don’t last very long, but they’ll make it through a few hours with no issues. We’ve never needed them to last any longer than that.Read more ›

Outstanding – Best monitors we’ve ever owned.
By lunchtable on July 12, 2014
Verified Purchase
This is really an excellent product, and at such an affordable price! In fact, these are the best baby monitors we’ve ever owned. We are on our third child, and our other set of monitors (an AngelCare set that did both audio and monitored baby’s movement in the crib) were either lost or thrown away. So we bought these when our third child was born, and these are the things that are good:

Pros:
1. This monitor uses DECT 6.0. This is newer tech, and is the same technology as that in the best cordless phones. We got our first DECT 6.0 cordless phone last year, and I was very excited to find it in monitors now. Here are the reasons DECT 6.0 is great:
A) Security built in, so only you hear your baby.
B) Multiple communication streams from DECT 6.0 devices can be accommodated, so your monitors don’t interfere with other DECT 6.0 devices like cordless phones. I’ve had no interoperability issues with my cordless phone and my monitors.
C) DECT 6.0 has been around a while in Europe and other places, but it took a long time to get approval for dedicated radio frequency spectrum here in the US. Now that the FCC has approved it, though, it is the best tech for this sort of application. Why? Other monitors use frequencies like 900 Mhz or 2.4 GHz, which are crowded with other devices like wifi, microwaves, cordless phones and other monitors. DECT 6.0 has been given the 1.9 Ghz spectrum, and nothing else but DECT 6.0 devices are allowed to use it. Interference from 802.11 b/g/n wifi, or microwave ovens? Impossible, because those use the 2.4 Ghz frequency. Interference from 802.11 a/n/ac wifi? Impossible again, because those technologies use the 5 Ghz spectrum. Old cordless phone technology? Impossible, because they typically use the 900 Mhz or 2.4 Ghz frequencies.Read more ›

Does Not Work Consistently
By J. Perkins VINE VOICE on July 27, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What’s this? )
First, the pros. The units are lightweight. I like having two parent units. You can leave one in the bedroom and one downstairs in the kitchen or family room. You can plug the units in or install 2 AAA batteries. The cordless phone did not interfere with the monitor.

Unfortunately, this monitor do not seem to pick up and transmit sounds adequately and consistently. It is voice activated, rather than continuously carrying sounds in a room, which would make me very nervous as a parent of a young baby. We have used a Sony BabyCall for a long time. We even found some gently used ones on ebay after our first set died out. The Sony has a setting for continuous transmission and voice-activated setting. I wish this monitor had a similar set up because it certainly was not picking up everything in the room. At times it would not pick up the sounds until a few seconds after they started. It also would drop the transmission at times while someone was talking. The monitor has to be placed very close to the crib or bed.

Baby monitors have to work perfectly—they cannot just work ok. If they are simply mediocre, they are not worth having. While my kids are older I still use a monitor for the youngest. I will keep playing with this monitor to see if I can figure out how to get it working right. However, at this time I cannot give this a positive review.

Great sound – much better than expected
By Sly-Dawgg on July 3, 2012
Style Name: Monitor with Two Parent Units Verified Purchase
As a new father, I wasn’t sure what to expect. After trying a few older models by different brands, I ended up just getting something cost efficient by looked stable based on reviews. When I ordered these, I had pretty good hopes, but was very surprised. They are amazing. Before our baby came, I would be in the nursery setting up things and could communicate very easily to others throughout the house (was on a ladder). After a bad thunderstorm, we lost power, and they still worked just fine.
They now work great with baby in the nursery and we are so happy we got this brand/model!

Update: My original review was made a July, but I should have waited a little longer. It’s now October, and just one night the units all started beeping at 3am and told me they were “Not Linked.” There wasn’t a power-outage or anything like that. When I finally got in touch with VTech they told me “oh yea, that happens some times. If you followed the instructions in the manual then they are broken and won’t talk to each other anymore. Sorry… Oh, and you can’t return them because you don’t have the original box.”

Another Update: After my complaint was heard on Amazon, VTech took my broken item back for a replacement. In May 2013 (not quite a year after purchasing the original, let alone receiving the above replacement), I had to contact VTech again due to the same issue when I moved to a new house. This time VTech seemed to be much more on the ball. As soon as I gave them the model number and said “they are not linking” the representative stopped me and started the process of sending out a new unit. Within 2 days I had a replacement. So I guess there is something to be said about VTech knowing about the issue and sending out new units to you if they break; but doesn’t seem efficient to have to send multiple replacements in 1 year…

2015 Update: Some people have asked so I wanted to make the update; since my original review in 2012 it does appear VTech has changed their return policy. It no longer looks like they need the original box, as they did in 2012. One additional thing would be the unit they sent out in 2013 worked for a while, but about 6-8 months ago the LCD screens started to fade so I could no longer see the volume level and such, but the sound still worked. They all died completely about 2 months ago, so I guess I got 2 years out of the third unit…

Apartment living and no external interference.
By Eternal Howl on June 8, 2012
Style Name: Monitor with Two Parent Units Verified Purchase
I had this unit shipped overnight after our NTM-910YLW – Sony Baby Call Nursery Monitor unit started having constant issues with a ticking noise that would not have been very sleep-friendly for parents. Prior to this, we would get interference with cell phones and other electronic devices intermittently, but we perservered.

Let me note first that I have only just got the VTech today, but already I like it. I chose the model with two receivers so that we could have them permanently in the two rooms most frequented (bedroom and living room).

The parent units require an initial 11-18 hour charge before unplugging and using without the power cord. There are two different instructions. Therefore, I would suggest going with the longer charge to ensure the battery is well conditioned.

Aside from the hiccups that our Sony had, let me point out some major ‘user-related’ differences.

The Sony NTM 900 that we bought had only one parent unit. This particular VTech monitor came with two parent units. Sometimes when going to bed, I’d forget to grab the monitor, so it’s one little hassle I don’t have to consider now.

The Sony NTM 900 is analogue and while you can adjust channels, if you have a lot of electronics, or many neighbors, you will probably find this is not the model for you.

The VTech is digital and uses DECT Technology (the same stuff as is used with cordless telephones). I’m not sure that a police scanner won’t pick up on your baby conversations, but they claim it’s very secure. So far, I have no outside interference, funny noises etc (unless you count the baby babble).

Even though we have a sound machine in baby’s bedroom and the lullaby is always going, the Vtech monitor is barely picking it up, but it will respond when baby starts to make a noise. I like this, because I’m starting to go a little crazy with Rock-A-By Baby and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

The Vtech has different options for being alerted to baby noises. You can set it to vibrate, have a sound alert, or actually hearing the baby. It also has the ability to talk from the parent unit to the baby unit so that if you wish to soothe baby without going in and disturbing him/her, you can. The Sony NTM 900 was one-way only.

This was the first time I had chosen one day shipping and am very pleased with Amazon (and UPS’s) service. It was worth it. I can sleep in my bed again tonight and not in the nursery.

Update 09/23/2012: Roaming distance outside is at least 250-300 yards (at a guess because I’m not good with guessing distance) and product is still working perfectly without interference. I’d definitely recommend a digital monitor over an analogue one.

Update 05/04/2013: Product worked great, but after the baby unit was disconnected from the wall recently (by mistake), we have been unable to resynchronize the parent units to the baby unit, which renders them pretty useless. So, while I rated this as a good product, it could be something we’re doing wrong, so I’m a bit loathe to downgrade my initial review just yet. Just note that I’m not the only person to have had this issue.

Avent vs Angelcare vs Vtech
By Mel M. on March 28, 2013
Style Name: Monitor with One Parent Unit Verified Purchase
UPDATE 6/4/13 – I’m keeping the Vtech rating at 4 stars. This is due to battery life. I can get about maybe 6-8 hours out of a charge, which is not very much. I’m guessing they really cheaped out on the battery. It does beep to alert you when the battery is running low. As long as you remember to plug it in every evening, it’s not a problem. Otherwise, it’s a fabulous unit and has been working excellent for our family. Still the best choice of the 3 I reviewed below.

UPDATED 3/28/13
I’ve owned the below 3 units over the course of the last 2 years. I recommend the VTech for now (I’ve only had it a few weeks, but it is by far the winner in performance AND value). For features, I only listed the features that I felt would be important to the average buyer. Some of the units had other features that I didn’t list because I didn’t think there were critical in my decision making process.

Also, it might be important to note that we live in a 2 story house and we have Wi Fi.

Philips AVENT Basic Baby Monitor with DECT Technology
1 star
Price I paid: $95

Features:
talk back – yes
night light – yes
battery backup on Baby Unit – yes
Temperature – no (but available on upgraded units)
Visual sound indicator – yes, LED

Ease of use and customization of features (ie: setting the sensitivity level, etc): easy, intuitive.

Signal: excellent, DECT, crystal clear

Other thoughts: Loved this monitor until……. after about 6 months of use the parent unit would randomly turn itself off with no warning, no beeping, nothing. I started waking up in the morning to an “off” parent unit. This happened even if it was plugged into the charger. When I pressed “on”, it would power up just fine and work well for a few days. Then it would shut off again. After a few weeks, it started shutting itself of more and more frequently. Thought it was a faulty unit, so I called Avent and they promptly sent out a replacement for free (nice customer service!). After few months of use the second unit started doing the same thing. Therefore, cannot recommend this product – it’s dangerous if it turns off while you’re sleeping. If you run a search on the reviews for this product for “turns off” you will see that it has happened to others.

Angelcare Baby Sound Monitor, White
2 stars
Price I paid: $59

Features:
talk back – no
night light – yes
battery backup on Baby Unit – yes
Temperature – yes
Visual sound indicator – yes. But it’s not LED (which is very bright), it’s part of the digital display, so you probably wouldn’t notice the bars lighting up. So, yes, there is a visual sound indicator but it’s poorly designed rendering it not useful.

Ease of use and customization of features: HORRIBLE, clumsy, not intuitive. You WILL need to bust out the manuel everytime you want to changes something. Channel selection is done at the Baby Unit, not the Parent Unit. That means if you have a bad connection, you have to go into the nursery to change the channel and possibly run the risk of disturbing a sleeping baby. You have to go through a series of random steps, pushing buttons in a certain sequence on both the nursery unit and parent unit. Also, it doesn’t scan the channels to seek the best connection. You have the manually go through and listen to each channel and decide which one sounds the best to you. Sensitivity adjustment is also done on the Nursery Unit. Temp display is bizarre. If you turn the Parent Unit on AFTER the Nursery Unit (which is about 99% of the time, since I, like most people I know, just leave the Nursery Unit on 24/7) the display shows the channel. And will stay on the channel until the temp changes. So, the only way you can see what the temp is if the temp changes. It would have made a lot more sense to have the channel appear on the display first and then time out and default back to the temp setting since I think that as long as you’re getting a good signal, you don’t really care what the channel number is. But you probably do care about the temp.

Signal: 8 channel 927 MHz frequency. Started off good but after several months of use, the reception isn’t as clear. I’ve tried all the different channels, but I still get intermittent static. It’s annoying because it wakes me up.

Other thoughts: display on the parent unit is BRIGHT. Some may find it annoyingly bright if you like a really dark room. I originally thought this was a good value (at the time of purchse, my point of reference was the $95 Avent), but now after owning the $29 Vtech, I think the Angelcare is totally overpriced, especially considering how difficult it is to program the features. Not acceptable.

VTech Communications Safe & Sound Digital Audio Monitor
4 stars (if it holds up, I will change to 5 stars)
Price I paid: $29 (Value!!!)

Features:
talk back – yes
night light – yes (nightlight also has “auto on” feature which is kinda cool)
battery backup on Baby Unit – no
Temperature – no
Visual sound indicator – yes, LED

Ease of use and customization of features: easy, intuitive.

Signal: excellent. DECT technology, same as Avent. Now, I’ve only had this unit for a few weeks, so hopefully the quality doesn’t start to go downhill after a few months. If so, I will post an update.

Other thoughts: this monitor also has a “vibrate” feature, which I thought was interesting. On the parent unit, you would not be able to tell it’s on if the room is dark because the display screen is not backlit unless you are actively pushing a button on the unit (I assume to save battery power, it goes into a “sleep mode”). I wish there was a small LED indicator for this. After my Avent experience above I have trust issues ;). With this parent unit, I have to reach for it and push a button so the screen lights up to confirm it’s actually on. It’s minor, but I think worth mentioning. The Avent monitor had a small LED that was lit when it was on.

For the price, the clarity, the features, and ease of use, VTech wins hands down. It has all the same features and clarity that the Avent had (actually, the Vtech has even more features with the sound alert and vibrate alert), but it was 1/3 of the cost. So, unless it starts shutting itself off, this is a FANTASTIC monitor at a FANTASTIC price.

The ONLY monitor we would use!
By Amazon Customer on August 3, 2014
We have used Angelcare monitors with each of our three children, and absolutely LOVE them. Most recently purchasing the video monitor, which has been great, but used the ”sound only” 8 years ago when the video system had not been available. I have so much peace of mind knowing that the sensor is there, and will alert me if my baby stops breathing. Throughout all these years, we have only had one “false alarm”, and that was when my son (who was 9 months at the time), had scooted to the very corner of the crib. We soon switched to just using the sound/video system without the sensor pad, as he was just moving around too much, and nearing the 1 year mark where SIDS is not as concerning. Otherwise, I trust that this unit will work, as I have ”tested” it several times.

I will say that you do have to get in the ”habit” of turning the sensor off when you take baby out of crib (and turning it on again when baby goes in). The alarm will alert right away, and scare you to death…But at least we know it’s working.

One reviewer mentioned that you have to ”prop up” the base piece to be able to see your baby, and that the video unit had a small screen in which they could only see the babies face. Well, to this, I would say that you do have to find a space to put the base monitor that will provide a good view of your baby. Wouldn’t this be the same for ALL video monitors on the market? We did put up a small shelf above the crib, to have a nice view of our baby. Depending on how near (or far) you place the unit, will allow you a big (or small) view of your baby. I’m assuming this reviewer had the base positioned so closely to their baby that they could only see his/her face, in which case they could have simply scooted the unit away to provide a better view.Read more ›

After losing a baby to sids, this has given us more peace of mind than anything else. Make sure to buy a flexible tripod to mount on wall as well, otherwise cords are dangling from bed to wherever you have it sitting… Nail cords down to wall if possible.

Love this thing! Peace of mind for new parents.
By srowlands on August 15, 2015
Some friends of ours gave this monitoring system to us as a baby shower gift back when movement and temperature monitoring were still novel things and back when the system cost $350 plus. I recorded my initial impressions in the form of a thank you note the first night that I used it, and my opinion has not changed since, after using it through two babies: this is the best thing you can buy for your sleep, sanity, and peace of mind. Well worth the money. We had only two “false alarms” in over two years of using this thing, but as I told my husband: who’s to say those were false alarms and not legitimate alarms? By the time we got in the room the baby (same one both times, and we have had two) was awake and breathing, but that was only after this system sounded its initial alarm… as I understand it, the deal with SIDS can often be that the infant’s internal trigger that regulates breathing may simply stop triggering– and a sudden jolt in time such as an alarm noise from this system can get it started again. So again, who is to say that “false alarms” from this system didn’t actually prevent tragedy?

I believe in the Angelcare video and movement sensors 100%, even now years later, when my kids have outgrown it. Here is the thank you note I wrote to the people who gave me the system, word for word from the first night I used it (three years ago), except that names and identifying details have been removed. Having used the system for over two years through two kids, I would not change a word of the below review, except to add that, the older they get, the more you will love having the video camera to see what the monsters are up to.Read more ›

UPDATED REVIEW – Chose Both Samsung & Angelcare, Great Combination! Angelcare Technology = Incredible, Peace of Mind vs SIDS
By Hyoun Kim TOP 500 REVIEWER on January 30, 2014

[[[ UPDATED REVIEW – April 8, 2014 ]]]
So here I am, coming back to update my experience with the movement monitor. My daughter was born prematurely, in late February, so we’ve been using the monitor for a little over 5 weeks now. Hands down, this purchase was 100% worth it. It has already potentially saved my child THREE times. Over the course of having our baby at home, she has been in the crib since day 1. Every time she is in the crib, the Angelcare monitor detects her movements (especially breathing) every time. The “metronome” icon constantly moves to show she is breathing. About one week ago, the alarm went off and my wife rushed into the nursery. She didn’t even check to see whether it was a false alarm. She immediately scooped up our daughter to make sure she was OK. A day later, the same thing happened, once again and my wife started doubting the movement monitor after the 2nd time, thinking it was broken due to “false alarms”. So I spent about an hour, doing the towel test again and checking the calibration on if it could detect movement. I didn’t see any issues and left the sensitivity alone. The 3rd time that the alarm went off, I ran into the nursery, but instead of picking my daughter up, I gently shook her while she was in the crib. Next thing I heard was a huge gasp coming from her lungs. It was almost as if she was holding her breath.

Since then, we haven’t had an episode, but we are especially thankful that the Angelcare monitor was there to warn us… false alarm or not.

So worth it!!! Highly recommend.
By busymom on February 18, 2014
I have five children. My first child was born prematurely and had respiratory issues. He was in the NICU and stopped breathing at a week old. He was sent home with us at two weeks old with the doctors telling us he was fine. Needless to say, I was panicked and purchased this for peace of mind. In his first six months, the alarm went off with him sleeping, in the middle of the night, SEVERAL times. I would jump up and grab him, startling him.

I used this same monitor with my next three children. This monitor worked fine but NEVER alarmed. I gave the monitor away when we thought we were done, and then had a surprise child so purchased this monitor again. It has not ever alarmed with this child either.

There is no way to prove that SIDS was prevented. In my mind, I do not think it was only coincidence that this monitor alarmed ONLY with my most at risk child. This monitor is worth its weight in gold. I highly recommend it for any concerned parent!!!!

this monitor actually saved my daughter, so grateful to angelcare
By christopher david hall on October 10, 2014
I love this monitor. I used it when i had my daughter almost 9 years ago. Yes the monitor goes off every once in awhile for no reason but better safe than sorry. The first time it went off was when my daughter was 2 months old. I checked on her to find her not breathing and blue. I am so grateful to this monitor, because of this monitor my daughter will soon be 9 yrs old. I used this monitor with my 8 yr old daughter, my 4 yr old daughter, and just got it for my 6 week old daughter.

Finally, NO static!
By Sam Archer VINE VOICE on August 20, 2010
Verified Purchase
Bought this as a replacement for the Fisher-Price Sounds ‘N Lights Dual Receiver Monitor M5578 which was horrible because of static and poor sound sensitivity.

This monitor has been among the best I’ve ever used (I’ve had many over the last 6 years).

PROS:

1. Very sensitive. There is a sensitivity control on the back of the base station which works great. You can even hear the kids breathing or whispering. The Fisher-Price would only work if my kid was screaming.

2. NO static or interference. Finally, a monitor that doesn’t pick up stray radio programs or endless clicking and static. There can be a slight buzz if it’s searching for a new channel but that’s it. The Fisher-Price would buzz when trucks drove by or airplanes flew overhead, but this monitor doesn’t do that.

3. Has multiple channels to select from to give you the clearest signal. Great if your neighbors have the same monitor so you don’t listen to each other.

4. Excellent range. Good for at least 75 feet in my experience. Will even warn you if out of range.

5. Receiver uses rechargeable batteries which you can change yourself. You can upgrade the batteries if you want them to last longer, but this hasn’t been a problem for me. Has lasted at least two days without needing recharge.

CON:

Only comes with one receiver. Most monitors come with two. You can get two if you buy the motion sensitive pad which I didn’t need/want.

BOTTOM LINE:

Almost the perfect baby monitor. No static, good range, very sensitive, and lots of usable features.

Avent vs Angelcare vs Vtech
By Mel M. on March 17, 2012
Verified Purchase

Other thoughts: Loved this monitor until……. after about 6 months of use the parent unit would randomly turn itself off with no warning, no beeping, nothing.Read more ›

No static, but several small problems
By Leo Dirac on August 29, 2011
It does the basics of what it’s supposed to do quite well. It lets you listen to what’s going on in your baby’s room very clearly. The radio transmission is reliably free of static, even in our house with way too much metal in the walls. I would have expected that if it did this well (which it does), that’s all I need in a baby monitor. Turns out there are so many other small problems with it that I have mixed feelings about it.

First off, it’s really quiet. Even with the volume turned all the way up, you can’t hear baby’s small wimpers that indicate she’s starting to wake up, unless the room where you’re listening from is nearly silent. Other baby monitors are so loud they’re fine to use in rooms with several people holding a conversation. This one you need to pay extra attention to. With other baby monitors this wouldn’t be a deal breaker, because there’s usually a visual indicator of the volume level too.

The Angelcare also has a visual indication of the volume level in the room. But the color LCD display is very difficult to read because it has a tiny viewing angle. If the monitor is on a table, and you’re standing, the display always appears to have all of its indicators on. (All bars, 88 in the number display.) You need to be almost at eye level with it, or have it pointing straight at you to be able to read it. So you can’t count in using the visual display to see when baby’s waking up either. I prefer the kinds which have bright lights that tell you there’s something going on that you can see even in the middle of a rock concert.

Also, the out of range feature is simply bizarre. Most baby monitors will start complaining loudly to you if they lose signal and are no longer tracking what’s going on in baby’s room.Read more ›
